And when doing an update, it would check for new citations, update the note with all citing articles at that moment, and (optionally) alert the user that there are new citing articles (maybe by changing the icon of the note?).

I feel that this could be something more advanced after the basic functionalities are set out.

It should then also be configurable for each user. Additional we could also think about t trigger for new items to check for citations for them automatically after they are saved.
