Welcome to the R-Instat Wiki

R-Instat is a free, open-source statistical software designed to make data analysis accessible, intuitive, and impactful. Built on the powerful R programming language, R-Instat combines the flexibility of R with a user-friendly interface inspired by Instat+. This design enables learners and professionals to focus on concepts rather than complex theory, making statistical analysis more intuitive and accessible.

R-Instat provides a front-end to R that broadens its reach—especially across Africa—by simplifying access to advanced statistical tools. It supports informed decision-making across disciplines and education levels, from classrooms to community projects.

We believe good statistical understanding should be easy to learn and available to everyone. Developed primarily by African talent and shaped by multilingual collaboration, R-Instat reflects local needs while aiming for global standards.

Use this Wiki to explore features, learn how to use the software, and contribute to its growth.

A Pan-African Collaboration

R-Instat is not just a software—it’s the result of a long-standing collaboration between African and international partners committed to advancing statistical literacy and education. The project brings together educators, developers, and researchers working across institutions to build tools that are practical, inclusive, and locally relevant:

African Maths Initiative (AMI)

A Kenyan NGO founded by mathematicians and educators, AMI works to strengthen mathematical culture and capacity across Africa. AMI leads the development of R-Instat and other open-source tools, empowering communities through education, outreach, and research.

IDEMS International

IDEMS (Innovative Development, Education and Mathematical Sciences) is a UK-based Community Interest Company that supports AMI through mentorship, technical guidance, and collaborative software development. IDEMS helps bridge global expertise with local impact, ensuring sustainable growth and capacity building.

Why R-Instat?

  • Accessible Design: R-Instat is built for people who would like to exploring data visually. Whether you're new to R, a bit “R-shy,” or already comfortable with R, the software offers a flexible, intuitive interface that supports learning, exploration, and powerful analysis.

  • Conceptual Learning: Encourages good statistical practices by focusing on understanding and exploration rather than memorizing formulas or syntax.

  • African Relevance: Developed primarily within Africa, R-Instat includes features tailored to local data needs—such as climate analysis, education, and agriculture.

  • Global Standards: R-Instat is being developed to meet internationally recognized quality benchmarks, making it adaptable for diverse educational and professional contexts around the world.
