OpenStream Alpha 0.3 Release Notes

The Expressive Update

This release marks a significant shift in the design language of OpenStream, causing a complete overhaul of the user interface to align with the latest Material 3 Expressive standards. The focus has been on creating a UI that is not just functional, but fluid, responsive, and engaging for all your favorite movies and shows.

Material 3 Expressive Design Overhaul

We have moved beyond standard Material Design to adopt the "Expressive" set of guidelines. This results in a cleaner, bolder, and more motion-centric experience.

  • Expressive Motion: Animations now use emphasized easing and spring physics. Navigation transitions, button presses, and content loading feel more physical and responsive.
  • Shape & Form: Standard rectangles have been replaced with expressive shapes—squircles and rounded forms—throughout the app, from the video player controls to content thumbnail containers.

Enhanced Detail & Immersion

Every screen has been revisited to provide more context and visual richness for movies and TV series.

  • Richer Metadata: Screens now display more detailed information about content, including genres, ratings, and runtime, presented in a structured and scanable format.
  • Hero Visuals: We have increased the emphasis on high-quality structural imagery, using large posters and backdrop images to drive the visual hierarchy.

Player Improvements

The core viewing experience has received attention to match the new design standards.

  • Expressive Controls: The player UI now features animated controls that scale and fade with custom motion curves.
  • Stability Fixes: Resolved a critical crash that occurred when navigating directly to the next episode, ensuring seamless binge-watching sessions.
  • Subtitle & Audio: Continued improvements to subtitle rendering and track selection stability.

General Polish

  • Various minor UI bugs and alignment issues have been resolved.
  • Performance improvements in list rendering and navigation transitions.
