Release of SynthFirm (Firm Synthesizer and Supply-chain Simulator) national pipeline
SynthFirm is a national-scale agent-based freight demand model. Using an agent-based approach with publicly available freight data sources, SynthFirm synthesizes firms for entire U.S. across 400+ industries, and simulates interactions among freight agents within the U.S. and provides support for freight-related planning and decision-making.
• This newly released national pipeline include the following capabilities:
• Firm and truck fleet generation for entire U.S.
• Enhanced supply chain simulation and international flow generation
• Business-to-business (B2B) shipping characteristics simulation and logistic channel selection for entire U.S.
The current model support national-scale run and several regional runs, including San Francisco Bay Area, Seattle and Austin.

In this release, SynthFirm 2.0 tool is customized and executed for Puget Sound Regional Council (PSRC), with model calibrated and validated using PSRC employment data at parcel level. Please follow the readme file and prepared configuration file to get started.

SynthFirm 1.0 is a Python-based freight demand generation model. The current model support the following capabilities and can be applied to any FAF region within the US (defined here: https://faf.ornl.gov/faf5/):

  1. Synthesis of business establishments
  2. Business-to-business commodity flow generation
  3. Demand forecast
  4. International trade and port flow generation (Seattle and San Francisco only)
  5. Firm-level fleet generation
    The current release include complete inputs and configurations for Seattle, San Francisco and Austin regions.
