WIP and needs help from Phil. Will ask later but putting in a visible place so I don't forget.
we used these changes for about a month and didn't notice any issues, but we are going to pull from main and move forward without the changes.
@cmazzoli @jangid19 FYI this applied to nanops but was added in respsones to needs of pa_th
