Features

  • Prometheus Metrics: Exposes StrongSwan IPsec session metrics in Prometheus format
  • JSON API: Provides detailed session information via /sessions endpoint
  • VICI Protocol: Collects data directly from StrongSwan's VICI socket
  • Real-time Data: Query-based collection provides instant metrics

Metrics Exposed

Prometheus Metrics (/metrics)

  • probe_success - StrongSwan status (1 = up, 0 = down) with version label
  • strongswan_info - Software information (product, version)
  • strongswan_sessions_total - Total number of active IPsec tunnels
  • strongswan_bytes_in_total - Bytes received per connection (labeled by client ID)
  • strongswan_bytes_out_total - Bytes sent per connection (labeled by client ID)

JSON API (/sessions)

Returns detailed session information including:

  • Server hostname
  • Protocol (IKEv1/IKEv2)
  • Client remote IP and port
  • Client identity (remote-id)
  • Traffic selectors (virtual IPs)
  • Connection state
  • Bytes/packets in/out
  • Session established time

Prerequisites

StrongSwan Server Configuration

Your StrongSwan server must have the VICI plugin enabled. This is typically enabled by default in modern StrongSwan installations.

Verify VICI socket exists:

ls -la /var/run/charon.vici

Ensure the user running the exporter has access to the VICI socket:

# Add user to the appropriate group
sudo usermod -aG strongswan prometheus
# or
sudo chmod 660 /var/run/charon.vici

Installation

Build from Source

# Clone the repository
git clone <your-repo-url>
cd strongswan-exporter

# Download dependencies
go mod download

# Build
go build -o strongswan-exporter

# Optional: Build with version info
go build -ldflags "-X main.version=1.0.0 -X main.buildDate=$(date -u +%Y-%m-%d)" -o strongswan-exporter

Configuration

Create an exporter.yaml file:

# Path to StrongSwan VICI socket
vici_socket: "/var/run/charon.vici"

Usage

Basic Usage

./strongswan-exporter

With Custom Configuration

./strongswan-exporter --config.file=/etc/strongswan-exporter/exporter.yaml

Command-line Options

  --web.listen-address=":9234"
Address to listen on for web interface and telemetry

  --web.telemetry-path="/metrics"
Path under which to expose metrics

  --config.file="exporter.yaml"
      Path to configuration file

  --help, -h
      Show help

  --version
      Show version information

Endpoints

  • / - Landing page with links
  • /metrics - Prometheus metrics endpoint
  • /sessions - JSON API with detailed session information
  • /sessions_local - JSON API with local session information
  • /static - HTML view of active connections

Prometheus Configuration

Add this to your prometheus.yml:

scrape_configs:
  - job_name: 'strongswan'
    static_configs:
      - targets: ['localhost:9234']

Security Considerations

  1. Socket Permissions: Ensure the VICI socket has appropriate permissions
  2. Firewall: Restrict access to port 9234 to authorized hosts only
  3. Sensitive Data: The /sessions endpoint exposes client IPs and identities - consider authentication

Troubleshooting

No metrics shown

  • Check that StrongSwan is running: systemctl status strongswan
  • Verify VICI socket exists: ls -la /var/run/charon.vici
  • Check socket permissions: ensure the exporter user can access the socket
  • Review logs: journalctl -u strongswan-exporter -f

Permission denied on VICI socket

# Add exporter user to strongswan group
sudo usermod -aG strongswan prometheus

# Or adjust socket permissions
sudo chmod 660 /var/run/charon.vici
sudo chown root:strongswan /var/run/charon.vici

Connection to VICI fails

  • Ensure the vici plugin is loaded in StrongSwan
  • Check /etc/strongswan.d/charon/vici.conf exists
  • Verify StrongSwan configuration allows VICI connections

Empty session list despite active connections

  • Verify connections are actually established: swanctl --list-sas
  • Check that connections are IKEv2 (IKEv1 may have limited VICI support)
  • Review StrongSwan logs: journalctl -u strongswan -f
