discord-intl

Redefined internationalization support, created by Discord to manage millions of messages across multiple projects, multiple programming languages, and multiple client platforms. discord-intl supports an expanded message format that combines ICU MessageFormat syntax with Markdown to make authoring rich, stylized messages as clear and concise as possible.

This project was born out of a need for more flexibility with our translations, a desire for granular ownership, and a need to refactor to keep up with modern versions of intl-messageformat and others that power the system.

This repository contains the full set of packages for managing translations, both at runtime and the tools to support development:

  • @discord/intl - The runtime and client side package that powers the actual usage of messages and translations in a project. This is also the package used for defining messages that are able to be processed and handled by all of the other tools.
  • @discord/intl-message-database - A standalone Rust/WASM package that parses a message definition file to extract the messages along with the resolved meta information for each message. This is what powers all of the development tooling, including the transformers.
  • @discord/swc-intl-message-transformer - An SWC plugin written in Rust that transforms message usages into production-ready versions throughout an entire project.
  • @discord/rspack-intl-loader - Integration of the transformer for message definitions in webpack/rspack, the bundler we use for webp projects. Responsible for finding translation files and doing the actual code transformation.
  • @discord/metro-intl-loader - Integration of the transformer for message definitions in Metro, the bundler we use for react-native projects.

Usage

You most likely only need to know about how to use defineMessages to write new strings and string modules. A message definition file must have the extension .messages.js, and must have a default export that calls defineMessages inline, like this:

Development

Local development in another React Native project

If you need to develop discord/intl and test on react-native projects using Metro, you will have a bad time trying to deal with node_modules and dependency linking. Even though this project uses pnpm, which is generally pretty good about managing workspaces and cross-project links for you automatically, Metro doesn't understand the symlink nature of a lot of what pnpm does, and will throw errors about module resolution constantly.

The only way to work around this is to either use an npm-published version of the dependency, which is pre-compiled and always copied directly into the host project's node modules folder, or use pnpm pack on the package you want to test out locally, then manually install that package in the host project use a tarball link.

The latter is far and away the easiest and least-polluting method, so this workspace provides a command to pack all of the projects in this workspace into tarballs that you can then add manually:

Once this succeeds, you'll have a ./.local-packs folder in this repo with tarballs of each package. Then you can add those to your host project's dependencies like a normal file link:

The package manager for the host project should then copy and install the dependency, allowing Metro to treat it like any other dependency with proper node_modules resolution and all. To update the package and test a new change, just run the intl-cli eco local-pack command again, then re-install the package on the host. It's tedious, but it's the only way that currently works with module resolution across all bundlers.

Note that if you are testing changes in multiple packages, or in packages with nested dependencies, you will need to explicitly install each package you're changing in the host project, even if it's normally an implicit dependency. Otherwise, the host package manager might not link the right version (this is a limitation of pnpm pack and how it is being used to make this method work).
