The makefiles provided by the upstream project are horribly broken.

  • hard coded paths
  • hard coded compilers
  • core library must be installed first to build the device library
  • both libraries must be installed first to build the gpio tool
  • no real cross compiling support
  • not suitable for packaging

But https://github.com/hardkernel/wiringPi/blob/master/INSTALL still needs to be updated accotdingly.
