Load configuration from files, environment variables, and passed-in defaults.
In the simplest example, Confeeg
will load any of the default config files ( named: CONFIG_DEFAULTS
or config
; extensions: .json
, .yaml
, or .yml
) from the CWD and will bring in any environment variables starting with 'CONFIG_'.
var Config = require( 'confeeg' );
var util = require( 'util' );
Config.load( function( error, config ) {
console.log( util.inspect( config ) );
} );
Let's change the default filenames to load:
var Config = require( 'confeeg' );
var util = require( 'util' );
Config.load( {
files: [
'my_config.json',
'another_config.yml'
]
}, function( error, config ) {
console.log( util.inspect( config ) );
} );
Let's change the environment variable prefix to load all environment variable starting with 'FOO_' instead of 'CONFIG_':
var Config = require( 'confeeg' );
var util = require( 'util' );
Config.load( {
envPrefix: 'FOO'
}, function( error, config ) {
console.log( util.inspect( config ) );
} );
Let's pass in a default config:
var Config = require( 'confeeg' );
var util = require( 'util' );
Config.load( {
config: {
foo: 'bar'
}
}, function( error, config ) {
console.log( util.inspect( config ) );
} );
Let's change the loading precedence:
var Config = require( 'confeeg' );
var util = require( 'util' );
Config.load( {
order: [
'env', // load from environment first
'config', // then load from whatever default config is passed in
'files' // then load from files on disk
]
config: {
foo: 'bar'
}
}, function( error, config ) {
console.log( util.inspect( config ) );
} );
Confeeg will load up configuration data from:
json
configuration files, defaulting to CONFIG_DEFAULTS.json and config.jsonyaml
(andyml
) configuration files (same filename defaults above)- environment variables, defaulting to those that begin with 'CONFIG_'
- any passed-in configuration object
You can use this to control your configuration variable prefix if you prefer something other than 'CONFIG_'.
When loading environment variables, Confeeg will by default skip any empty/unset environment variables.
When loading from environment variables, Confeeg will use underscores to denote hierarchy, eg:
CONFIG_FOO_BAR_BAZ="yak"
Would end up in a configuration object as:
{
"foo": {
"bar": {
"baz": "yak"
}
}
}
However, you can disable that behavior by setting the 'envHierarchy' option to false, eg:
Config.load( {
envHierarchy: false
}, function( error, config ) {
// config.foo_bar_baz === 'yak'
} );
You can override the default files that Confeeg will search for using this setting.
You can override the loading order:
var Config = require( 'confeeg' );
var util = require( 'util' );
Config.load( {
order: [
'env', // load from environment first
'config', // then load from whatever default config is passed in
'files' // then load from files on disk
]
config: {
foo: 'bar'
}
}, function( error, config ) {
console.log( util.inspect( config ) );
} );
