cherrypicks turt2live/matrix-bot-sdk#373 due to crashlooping as a result of multiple concurrent DM invites being received, which then causes concurrent requests to Synapse, causing concurrent database transactions that repeatedly fail due to concurrent access, until Synapse gives up and returns a 500, crashing the application.
