The version of the Excalidraw base appears to be fairly outdated. A lot of the new features don't work properly, and some of my diagrams created with Excalidraw directly don't work with this specific whiteboard application. It's cool this exists, but it really doesn't quite look as more recent versions of Excalidraw do.
Upon finishing, open a new issue to re-base again for next Nextcloud major cycle
The update to upstream Excalidraw master (12 Oct 2026) is up for review in #1161, together with #1387, which keeps old 2.x tabs from breaking boards after the update. It needs our fork release first: nextcloud-deps/excalidraw#19 and nextcloud-deps/excalidraw#20. Planned as Whiteboard 3.0.
Just noticed that I can't open the .whiteboard files in Excalidraw.
We need to be able to open these files without relying on Nextcloud. Aren't Whiteboard and Excalidraw supposed to be compatible? Or do they use different file formats?
Thanks for asking! A .whiteboard file is the Excalidraw scene (elements, files, appState), but Whiteboard does not write the "type": "excalidraw" header that excalidraw.com checks before it opens a file, so it gets rejected.
For now you can get a copy that Excalidraw opens:
In the whiteboard, open the menu and choose "Export image…".
Turn on "Embed scene" and save as PNG or SVG.
Open that file on excalidraw.com. All elements stay editable.
I'll look into making .whiteboard files open in Excalidraw directly.
If the file cannot be opened directly in Excalidraw and must first be exported from Nextcloud, then that means I would not be able to access my files if Nextcloud is offline or unavailable.
Is there any other software that can open .whiteboard files directly?
I'm asking because if .whiteboard files can only be opened through Nextcloud, I probably won't use them. I prefer a format that remains accessible regardless of whether Nextcloud is running or not.

Thanks for clarifying.
