La Sfera

A Django-based digital humanities application for analyzing and presenting manuscript variations of historical texts, developed by the Roy Rosenzweig Center for History and New Media.

Quick Start

Prerequisites

  • Python 3.11+
  • PostgreSQL
  • Node.js (for Tailwind CSS)
  • Poetry

Installation

  1. Clone the repository:

    git clone <repository-url>
    cd lasfera-app
  2. Install dependencies:

    poetry install
    poetry shell

    Note: In Poetry version 2+, it is required to install the shell plugin before using poetry shell.

  3. Set up environment variables:

    cp .env.example .env
    # Edit .env with your database and other settings
  4. Run migrations:

    python manage.py migrate
  5. Create a superuser:

    python manage.py createsuperuser
  6. Start the development server:

    python manage.py runserver
  7. In another terminal, install NPM dependencies and start Tailwind CSS watcher:

    npm install
    cd theme/static_src
    npm install
    cd ../..
    python manage.py tailwind start

Visit http://localhost:8000 to see the application.
