Thanks, @vbadwaj. We will wait for #1344 and @jamesmkrieger to review this PR. I made a draft release for 2.6.0 already, once this is merged I will publish it.

Thanks, @jamesmkrieger. Also, @vbadwaj is adding in support for macos in the GitHub workflows so those tests run as well (to address #2048).

I don't think the conda build instructions should go here. We want to keep the development install with pip as an option.
