More-than-Human Augmentation

Coining and developing the concept of More-than-Human Augmentation (MtHA)

Core Idea

More-than-Human Augmentation: augmenting more-than-human entities (animals, plants, ecosystems, microbiomes) with technology so that humans can perceive, understand, and communicate with them. The augmentation target is the non-human world, not the human body.

This is NOT about augmenting humans to "become" more-than-human. It's about augmenting the more-than-human world to become legible to us.

Key Examples

  • Earth Species Project — AI models decoding animal vocalizations (NatureLM-audio)
  • Rolighed & Hansen (2025) — "Invitation to an Under-ground Party": contact mic in plant soil → disco ball sonification (DOI: 10.1145/3737609.3747107)
  • CETI — decoding sperm whale communication
  • PlantWave — translating plant bioelectrical signals into sound
  • Interspecies Internet (Vint Cerf, Diana Reiss) — communication infrastructure across species

Target Venue

ACM Transactions on Computer-Human Interaction (ToCHI) — standalone paper.
