Purpose
-------

A primary goal of all the conferences and user groups that refer to this Code of Conduct is to be inclusive to the largest number of contributors, with the most varied and diverse backgrounds possible. As such, we are committed to providing a friendly, safe and welcoming environment for all, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, ability, ethnicity, socioeconomic status and religion (or lack thereof).

I like the old wording with regardless of ... better, the overall sentence is rather long but to me it flows better and has less repetition.

I'm also not sure about providing vs. building, overall what we try to do is build a better community, that's right - but for an individual event we try to provide one. To me, build fits better for the purpose of an association and build fits better for a coc related to events.

I might be missing something here but I don't know why we'd need race, ethnicity and national origin. I thought ethnicity rather covers that.

Also not sure which meaning of size this would translate to :)

@PragTob

The previous text about 'regardless of gender, sexual orientation, ability, ethnicity, socioeconomic status and religion (or lack thereof)' is as a standard text of cause the easiest way (and used in a lot of other coc, events, etc.), but if the Ruby/tech community wants to become more progressive/inclusive, in my opinion (as I understood also @lauralindal 's) it is important that we need to make extra efforts in the direction of reducing the barriers and power structures for underrepresented groups by addressing them explicitly with a more welcoming text (than just 2 lines), because their issues, backgrounds and identities are much more various than we know or can imagine.

Laura and me are not 100%ly sure about the wordings in the listing. This is why especially for this part it is highly recommended to ask organizations who have expertise in these fields.

Yes, that"s definitely why we should get feedback from local organization that have more experience in this area :)

another reason why we changed the wording was that "contributors" is difficult to define - newcomers might not feel like they are contributing anything yet. but they are exactly the people to whom we want to be especially inviting :)

and i do believe that it makes sense to explain a bit more extensive who & what we mean rather than, as thuy mentioned, a standard sentence that many might just overread.

This Code of Conduct outlines our expectations for all those who participate in our community, as well as the consequences for unacceptable behavior.

We invite all those who participate in our events to help us create safe and positive experiences for everyone.

Why not safe?

There's been a lot of discussion about the idea of safe spaces. Basically, we will not be able to create really safe spaces. For example, even within women-only spaces, racist/transphobic/ableist/classist etc incidents can still happen. Intersectionality is often overlooked.
A safe space gives the impression that we could be free of microagressions and power structures within that space - while a safer space is one where we are aware of privileges and marginalization and try to deal with them.

To my reading, safe is the goal though, not safer, even if we can never fully reach this?

I'm not sure... should the goal be an ideal that we won't reach anyway or should the goal be something we could actually achieve?

The goal is safe and positive experiences for everyone and it's certainly possible to reach for individuals. The proper weakening of that would actually be "for almost everyone". :)

Going for safer sounds a bit like backpedaling.

encouraging sounds vague. How about supportive?

I'd prefer active over sharing, as sharing is a subset of active and active covers many more important aspects to me.

i think when discussing this with @1000miles, we found "active" to be a bit fuzzy and also difficult for introverted people or beginners. beginners might feel that they cant really contribute "actively" b/c they dont have much technical knowledge yet, but any other knowledge can be shared already... so "sharing" might be more fitting. happy about other suggestions though :)

* Exercise thoughtfulness and respect in your speech and actions.

not sure why consideration --> thoughtfulness

we might want input from a native english speaker here, but from my understanding, consideration carries a bit of hierarchy (e.g. someone is generous when considering someone elses perspective) whereas thoughtfulness does not :)
