Description

Go's standard library has never implemented Android timezone detection —
time/zoneinfo_android.go's initLocal() has stubbed time.Local to UTC
since gomobile's original Android port, with only a TODO comment:

func initLocal() {
    // TODO(elias.naur): getprop persist.sys.timezone
    localLoc = *UTC
}

As a result, every wails3 Android app currently gets UTC log timestamps
and UTC-based cron/timer behaviour regardless of the device's actual
timezone, even when the device is correctly configured (verified on a
physical device set to Asia/Shanghai).

This PR exposes the device's IANA timezone ID through the existing
application.Mobile bridge, following the same pattern already used for
StoragePath(), PowerJSON(), etc.:

  • Android: WailsBridge.getTimezone() returns TimeZone.getDefault().getID()
    (public Android SDK API — no native property access, no new CGO surface
    beyond the JNI bridge call mechanism Mobile.* already uses).
  • iOS: ios_timezone() returns [NSTimeZone localTimeZone].name. iOS is not
    affected by the underlying bug (its zoneinfo_ios.go has a real
    initLocal()), this is added purely for interface parity, since
    MobileManager requires both platform managers to implement the same
    method set.
  • Desktop: no-op stub returning "", consistent with every other
    Mobile.* method.

Timezone() only reports the value — it deliberately does not set
time.Local itself, so as not to silently mutate global runtime state for
apps that don't opt in. Callers apply it explicitly:

if tz := application.Mobile.Timezone(); tz != "" {
    if loc, err := time.LoadLocation(tz); err == nil {
        time.Local = loc
    }
}

This usage, along with the background on why it's needed, is documented in
mobile-api.md.

Fixes #6189

Is a WEP required?

This adds one method to MobileManager, which is technically new public
surface, so I want to flag it rather than assume. My read is that it's
small enough to skip the WEP process: it's a query-only getter with no new
behaviour, no new dependencies, and mirrors an established pattern
one-for-one on all three platforms — but I'll happily open a WEP first if
maintainers would rather see one for something touching the public
MobileManager interface.

Type of change

  • Bug fix (non-breaking change which fixes an issue)
  • New feature (non-breaking change which adds functionality)
  • WEP (proposal only; no implementation)
  • Breaking change (fix or feature that would cause existing functionality to not work as expected)
  • This change requires a documentation update

How Has This Been Tested?

Verified on a physical Android device (timezone set to Asia/Shanghai):
before this change, time.Now() / time.Now().Location() / time.Local
all reported UTC; after calling application.Mobile.Timezone() and
applying it via time.LoadLocation as shown above, they correctly report
Asia/Shanghai with the right wall-clock offset.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Mobile apps can retrieve the device’s IANA timezone on Android and iOS. Desktop returns an empty value, and retrieving the timezone does not change the app’s local time setting.
  • Documentation
    • Added guidance on loading the reported timezone and applying it when valid.

Go's Android port hard-codes time.Local to UTC (time/zoneinfo_android.go
initLocal() is a stub with a decade-old TODO to read persist.sys.timezone),
so every wails3 Android app currently shows UTC timestamps regardless of
the device's configured timezone.

Add Timezone() to the MobileManager interface, following the existing
StoragePath()/PowerJSON() pattern: a Java bridge method backed by the
public TimeZone.getDefault() API on Android, an NSTimeZone-backed
implementation on iOS (which is unaffected by the bug but kept at parity
with the interface), and a "" no-op on desktop.

The method only reports the device's IANA timezone ID; it does not touch
time.Local itself. Applying it is left to the caller:

    if tz := application.Mobile.Timezone(); tz != "" {
        if loc, err := time.LoadLocation(tz); err == nil {
            time.Local = loc
        }
    }

This mirrors how the rest of Mobile.* is designed (query, don't mutate
global state), and avoids silently changing time.Local for apps that
don't opt in.

Explanation

Issue #6189 expects the application local timezone to match the Android device timezone automatically. The PR implements the issue's bridge-exposure objective with application.Mobile.Timezone() and documents the IANA ID. The implementation does not set time.Local; the documentation requires each caller to call time.LoadLocation and assign the result. No automated test evidence establishes the expected automatic behavior.

Resolution

Initialize time.Local from the Android device timezone during application startup, and add automated coverage for the automatic behavior. If caller-applied timezone data is the intended requirement, revise issue #6189 before relying on this PR as its complete implementation.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Embed timezone data for the documented iOS workflow.

On iOS, the standard Go runtime does not provide a platform timezone database. The Wails iOS bundle also does not include one. Therefore, time.LoadLocation(tz) can return an error, and the guarded assignment leaves time.Local unchanged at UTC. Add the standard embedded timezone database import to the example.

🟡 Minor · Add getTimezone() to the Android example bridge. · mobile_features_android.go:199-202

v3/pkg/application/mobile_features_android.go:199-202
🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Add getTimezone() to the Android example bridge.

When an Android app based on this example calls application.Mobile.Timezone(), the checked-in bridge has no matching Java method. JNI clears the lookup exception and returns no result, so Timezone() returns "" instead of the device timezone.

The Android build regenerates Go bindings only. It does not replace WailsBridge.java.

I removed the documentation changes from this PR. The fix was only validated on Android, and I don't currently have an iOS test environment to verify the suggested documentation update. I'd prefer to keep this PR focused on the Android implementation change.
