The advised set for this release. The required set, #2003, is merged, so this is now based on main. The optional set (#1988) stacks on this. CI builds images for this branch like any PR (ghcr.io/githedgehog/dataplane:v0-<sha9>-{debug,release}, plus dataplane/frr and dataplane/validator).

Each commit is from an existing PR, rebased; see those for the details and their measurements.

commit(s) from what why it is advised
fix(nix): build the Rust code for the platform's CPU too #1986 -Ctarget-cpu was only ever given to C; Rust was built for baseline x86-64. +9-10 % throughput at every flow count on env-5. No new hardware floor: the C code already targets x86-64-v3.
fix(nix): keep the DWARF in the build-id debug files #1989 gdb, perf and symbolizers found an empty build-id debug file. Packaging only; shipped binaries stay stripped.
fix(n-vm): Connect to a hypervisor socket only once it is listening #1972 CI flake (ConnectionRefused from cloud-hypervisor). Test infrastructure only.
feat(timer-wheel): … ×2, refactor(…): create flows through a worker's handle, feat(…): expire flows on the worker's timer wheel, feat(…): reap masquerade mappings on the worker's wheel #1990, #1991, #1992 Flow and NAT-mapping expiry on a per-worker timer wheel instead of a tokio task per flow. Fixes the collapse at ≥1M flows on env-5 (tokio timer convoy, BGP down); costs ~0-3 % against no expiry at all.
perf(acl-filter): skip the lookups for a peering without ACLs #1987 A peering without a default action has no rules, so the reverse-flow and rule lookups cannot match. +6 % at 1M flows (8.96 → 9.54 Mpps), +6 % at 1k. ~30 lines.

Changes from the source PRs

Rebasing onto main (0.31.0) needed three small fixes, each folded into the commit it belongs to:

One conflict: net/src/flows/flow_info.rs imports, where main's opening_tcp_flags: OnceLock met the wheel's timer: Mutex. Both are kept.

Testing

Run locally on this head: just clippy (the CI derivation, with loom), rustfmt, and tests for timer-wheel, flow-entry, net, nat, acl-filter, dataplane and n-vm. Results are in a comment below once they finish. The timer wheel's own validation (env-5 E1-E3, loom/shuttle, miri) is in #1990-#1992.

Draft: no DCO sign-offs yet.

Walkthrough

The change adds a timer-wheel crate and moves flow and masquerade-mapping expiry to worker-owned timer wheels. It updates dataplane pipeline construction, VM socket startup, ACL lookup behavior, and Nix build configuration.

Changes: Worker-owned flow and mapping expiry

Layer / File(s) Summary
Timer-wheel crate and workspace setup
Cargo.toml, timer-wheel/*, flow-entry/Cargo.toml, net/Cargo.toml
Adds a configurable timer wheel with bounded sweeps, remote scheduling, cancellation, and tests.
Flow-table expiry ownership
net/src/flows/*, flow-entry/src/flow_table/*
Adds WorkerFlowTable, timer registration, timer-aware insertion, and bounded worker-driven expiry.
Worker pipelines and flow-table consumers
dataplane/src/drivers/*, dataplane/src/packet_processor/*, dataplane/src/runtime.rs, nat/src/*, acl-filter/src/tests.rs
Pipeline factories return worker flow handles. DPDK and kernel workers run expiry sweeps. NAT stages use worker-specific flow-table handles.
Masquerade mapping timers
nat/src/masquerade/*
Passes schedulers through allocation paths. Mapping reapers use side timers, and pool retirement cancels scheduled timers.

ACL and VM startup

Layer / File(s) Summary
ACL default handling
acl-filter/src/lib.rs, acl-filter/src/fuzz.rs
Lookup allows immediately when no peering default exists. When a default exists, lookup uses it as the fallback.
VM socket connection flow
n-vm/src/*
Adds retries for missing or refused Unix socket connections. QMP negotiation accepts an established stream. Startup errors drain child stderr.

Build configuration

Layer / File(s) Summary
Target CPU and binary fixup
nix/*, default.nix, init/src/vfio.rs
Passes target CPU values into Rust profiles, moves debug processing to fixup hooks, and changes the VFIO ioctl constant type without changing its value.

A platform set `-march` (or `-mcpu`) for C only. rustc got no
`-Ctarget-cpu`, so the Rust code, the whole packet path included,
was built for baseline x86-64 plus SSSE3: no AVX2, no BMI, no
LZCNT or MOVBE, while DPDK and the other C code got x86-64-v3. The
shipped binary shows it: no BMI2 instruction in any Rust function,
and AVX2 only where a crate checks the CPU at run time.

Each platform now names its target CPU (its `-mcpu`, or else its
`-march`), and the x86_64 and aarch64 profiles pass it to rustc;
with `-Zbuild-std`, the standard library follows.

The binaries' debug outputs held no DWARF where tools look for it.
postInstall moved each binary to $debug/bin, stripped a copy into $out
and gave it a debuglink; then separateDebugInfo, during fixup, split
the already-stripped $out binary again, and wrote a
lib/debug/.build-id file with only .debug_gdb_scripts in it. gdb, perf
and llvm-symbolizer find debug info by build ID, so they found that
file and no line tables; the full copy in $debug/bin was named only by
a bare debuglink nothing resolves, and the debugger image linked the
empty one.

Leave native binaries whole until fixup: separateDebugInfo then
copies their full DWARF into the build-id file, and postFixup strips
them and points their debuglink at it (separateDebugInfo does not
strip by itself, since this derivation sets dontStrip). wasm keeps its
own split. The shipped binaries stay stripped (release dataplane:
48 MB, no .debug_* sections), and llvm-symbolizer and gdb now resolve
their addresses to source lines through the build ID. $debug/bin goes
away.

A socket file appears at bind(2), before its server calls listen(2).
n-vm waited for the file to exist and then connected, so a connect that
landed between the two was refused. On a loaded CI runner that window
is wide enough to hit: check/debug failed an_inline_config_reaches_the_
guest_cmdline with cloud-hypervisor's create_vm refused (ECONNREFUSED)
on a PR that does not touch n-vm.

connect_to_socket retries a refused connection as well as a missing
socket, within the same polling budget. It replaces the exists-then-
connect pairs for the cloud-hypervisor API socket (probed, then dropped:
its client opens a connection per request), the QMP socket (the probe
is the connection QMP negotiates on) and the kernel console. The
virtiofsd sockets keep wait_for_socket: a vhost-user daemon serves one
client, and a probe would take it.

If create_vm or boot_vm still fails, or the API socket never accepts,
cloud-hypervisor's stderr is now logged, as QEMU's already was. That
tells a crashed hypervisor from a race.

QemuError::QmpConnect is gone; a QMP connect failure is now a
VmError::SocketPoll or SocketTimeout like the other sockets.

Per-flow tokio timer tasks collapse the gateway at a million flows:
every refreshed flow re-arms a task on the shared management runtime,
which convoys on its locks until BGP drops. A single-level wheel owned
by the worker thread avoids the runtime entirely.

Timers do not store their deadline; the payload is asked when its
bucket comes due and is moved if the deadline went later, so a refresh
costs the refresher only its own store. Entries live in a slab with an
intrusive list per bucket: insert and cancel are O(1). Each sweep does
a bounded amount of work and hands fired and cancelled payloads back
as a batch. Other threads cancel through a TimerRef and schedule
through a Remote; both queue for the owner's next sweep.

A timer fires no earlier than its deadline and, unless the wheel is
behind, within a tick of it. A model-based property test checks this
against a map of deadlines, with cancellation, refresh, wrap-around
and budgets; a concurrency test runs under loom and shuttle.

…andle

The network functions that create flows (masquerade, port forwarding,
the flow tracker and static NAT through it) now hold a WorkerFlowTable
instead of the shared Arc<FlowTable>. The handle derefs to the table,
so lookups and every other read are unchanged; the pipeline factory
gives one handle to all the stages of a pipeline.

No behaviour changes. This is where a worker-owned expiry wheel will
attach: a flow created through the handle is created by that worker.

Each flow used to get a tokio task on the shared management runtime,
re-armed whenever its deadline moved. At a million flows with the 5 s
masquerade timeout that is several hundred thousand wakeups a second
through one runtime; on env-5 it convoyed on the runtime's locks until
BGP dropped and the gateway stopped forwarding.

A WorkerFlowTable now owns a timer wheel on its thread, and inserting
through it puts the flow on the wheel; FlowTable's insertions are
crate-private, so a flow cannot enter the table without a timer. The
flow keeps the TimerRef in place of its CancellationToken: invalidating
or detaching a flow cancels the timer from any thread, and the owner
removes the flow on its next sweep. Refreshing a deadline costs the
wheel nothing.

The pipeline factory hands each worker its pipeline together with its
handle. A DPDK worker sweeps after every burst and every 64 idle polls;
a kernel-driver reader after every burst and every 10 ms. Each sweep
looks at no more than 64 timers, so an expiry storm becomes a short
backlog rather than a stall of the rx loop. NAT mapping reapers still
run on the management runtime.

Expiry tests advance the paused clock and sweep explicitly, which also
lets the invalidation test run under miri again. A test inserting a
shorter-lived flow after a longer one guards the wheel's anchor, and
the flow-table concurrency fuzz now sweeps each worker's own wheel
while other workers invalidate. The fuzz fabric no longer needs to
retire its flows to let timer tasks finish. nat now asks for the tokio
macros it uses instead of inheriting them from flow-entry.

A Remote can now be made on its own, and Wheel::with_remote builds a
wheel that adopts what was queued on it, including timers queued before
the wheel existed. A worker can then hand out its queue as soon as it
starts, while its wheel is created later, on its own thread, when the
clock is first read there.

…r's wheel

Each masquerade mapping had a tokio reaper task on the management
runtime, the last per-entry tokio task on the packet path: DPDK workers
entered that runtime only so mappings could spawn reapers there.

A worker's wheel now also keeps side timers, and a mapping's reaper is
one, scheduled through the Schedule trait. On the packet path, the
masquerade NF schedules it on its worker's WorkerFlowTable. When a
configuration change carries a mapping into a new allocator, the
control plane, which has no wheel, schedules it through a
TimerRegistry that workers register with as they build their
pipelines; it hands timers to workers in turn, and parks them until
the first worker registers.

When the last copy of a pool is dropped, the pool cancels every reaper
it started, so an old allocator's tables do not outlive it until its
mappings' (unbounded, configurable) deadlines. A reaper that fires
before its cancellation arrives sees the pool retired and stops.

DPDK workers no longer enter any tokio runtime, and the driver no
longer takes the management runtime's handle. nat drops tokio-util.

For a packet on a flow that no rule matches directly, the filter
builds the reply's summary from the reverse flow, looks that up too,
and only then falls back to the peering's default action. A peering
without an ACL takes that whole path for every packet of every flow:
it upgrades the `Weak` to the reverse flow (an atomic on a cold cache
line, then another to drop it) and reads that flow's key, to look up
rules that cannot exist.

Every peering with an ACL registers a default action for both
directions, and only such a peering has rules, so a pair without a
default action can match nothing either way. The filter now allows it
without looking anything up. The config-oracle fuzz test checks the
invariant this rests on.

`ioctl`'s request is an `unsigned long` in glibc and an `int` in musl,
and `libc` spells that `libc::Ioctl`. The test named `c_ulong`, so its
test binary did not build for musl, and the v0.31.0 tag's
`cross/dataplane/bluefield3/musl` job failed on it.

Remove the stale timer-runtime sentence from the DriverDpdk::start docs.

This change removes the Tokio runtime handle from start and Worker::run. Flows now expire on each worker's own wheel. The doc comment on Line 57 still says "The timer runtime must keep running until all workers have joined." No timer runtime exists anymore, so that sentence is no longer true. Delete it, or replace it with a note that each worker expires its own flows.

/// Queue handles borrow the ports, which must outlive the worker scope.
- /// The timer runtime must keep running until all workers have joined.
+ /// Each worker expires the flows its pipeline creates on its own timer wheel.

As per coding guidelines: "If this inconsistency is introduced by the changes under review, suggest revisions to the documentation to reflect the implementation as it would exist if the changes were merged."

# Native binaries keep their DWARF until fixup: `separateDebugInfo` copies it to
# `$debug/lib/debug/.build-id/`, where gdb, perf and llvm-symbolizer look it up
# by build ID, and postFixup strips the binary once that copy exists. Stripping
# here instead would leave that hook only the stripped binary to work from, and
# the build-id file it writes would hold no DWARF at all.

Preserve the debugger image’s binaries.

The debugger image links workspace.dataplane.debug, workspace.cli.debug, and workspace.init.debug into /bin. Removing $debug/bin leaves those binaries absent, so commands such as gdb /bin/dataplane fail. Preserve the debug binaries there, or add the runtime binaries to the image and configure GDB’s debug-file search path. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Cancel the new timer if the flow is no longer Active when bind_timer runs.

The insert paths set the flow to Active before they bind its timer:

  • insert_pair_if_admitted_timed sets Active under the write lock, releases the lock, calls displace, and only then calls timers.schedule.
  • insert_common and insert_if_absent_timed do the same.

Another thread can look up the flow in that window and call invalidate(), for example through invalidate_pair on a TCP RST or a NAT reconfiguration. invalidate() changes the status from Active to Cancelled and calls cancel_timer(). At that point the timer slot is still None, so nothing is queued. The worker then binds a live timer to a Cancelled flow.

The flow is not removed on the next sweep. It stays in the table and keeps counting against capacity until its deadline fires. detach() has the same window.

Check the status under the timer mutex after binding. invalidate and detach store the status before they take the same mutex, so one of the two sides always sees the other's update.

Update FlowInfo::bind_timer to check the flow status while holding the timer
mutex after binding; if the status is no longer Active, cancel the newly bound
timer. Preserve cancellation of any previously bound timer.

🟡 Changes recommended

Deferred expiry can discard refreshed flows, pool retirement can retain orphaned reapers, and debugger packaging loses application executables.

Note

🤖 AI-drafted (Claude) on behalf of @mvachhar, reviewed by him before posting.

I'm approving so I don't hold this up while I'm in meetings, but item 1 is a must-fix for the release.

No other blockers turned up in the timer wheel, flow expiry, masquerade reaping or the ACL fast path. Moving expiry off the mgmt runtime is the right fix for the ≥1M-flow collapse.

Please file an issue for anything below that isn't fixed in this release, and link it here.

1. Must fix: expiry can fall behind under a flood of new flows

  • The cause: the DPDK loop sweeps EXPIRY_BUDGET = 64 timer units once per loop iteration (dataplane/src/drivers/dpdk/worker.rs:149) and never sweeps again while ExpirySweep::behind(). Under sustained load there are no idle sweeps either.
  • The arithmetic: each new flow pair from install_pair adds two timers, so one full 64-packet burst of new flows can add 128 timers, and more with several ports.
  • The failure: with sustained traffic where more than about half the packets open new flows (a SYN flood or UDP scan through masquerade or the flow tracker), the backlog grows without bound.
    • Flows past their deadline stay in the table until it reaches capacity.
    • From then on, new masquerade and port-forward connections are dropped, and the flow tracker lets new connections through untracked (nat/src/flow_tracker/mod.rs:125).
    • It only recovers once the flood stops. That is better than the old collapse, but it's a cheap way to deny new connections.
  • Suggested fix: keep sweeping while behind(), up to a cap per iteration, or scale the budget with ports × MBUF_BURST.
  • The comment on EXPIRY_BUDGET also says "twice an rx burst", but MBUF_BURST is 64, so it is one burst.

2. Timer generation wrap (unlikely, cheap to fix)

  • The mechanism:
    • timer-wheel slot generations are u32 with wrapping_add (timer-wheel/src/lib.rs:333), and the free list is LIFO, so under steady churn the same few slots are reused constantly.
    • FlowInfo keeps its TimerRef after the timer fires.
  • The conditions, all needed:
    • a hot slot is reused exactly 2^32 times (days at about 1M new flows/s on one worker);
    • while some flow Arc still holds a stale TimerRef to that slot;
    • and that flow is then invalidated or re-bound.
  • The outcome: previous.cancel() cancels the unrelated live timer that now has the matching generation. That flow is then treated as cancelled-but-re-bound and never expires.
  • Fix: a u64 generation (or a FIFO free list) removes it.

3. Leaks when the wheel refuses a timer

  • Flows: if the wheel returns Full, the flow is invalidated but never removed (flow-entry/src/flow_table/expiry.rs:134-140).
  • NAT mappings: a refused masquerade reaper is dropped, on a local insert or, silently, when adopting a remote one. Its mapping keeps its port and pinned address until the next config change replaces the pool.
  • Severity: Full needs about 2^32 slots, so this is effectively unreachable today. A log line or counter would at least make it visible.
  • Related trap: TimerRegistry never unregisters a worker. A future pipeline that stops sweeping (an exited reader, or a factory call whose pipeline is thrown away) would keep receiving reapers that never fire. That isn't reachable today.

4. Test gap

No concurrent test reaps a masquerade mapping on one worker's wheel while another worker refreshes or joins it. nat/src/masquerade/concurrent_fuzz.rs never sweeps, and apalloc/concurrent_fuzz.rs only races a reaper against a fresh mapping. Each race has a single-threaded test, but the cross-worker interleaving isn't exercised.
